Tradition: Kindergarten Memories
Since we mentioned Kindergarten in a post last week,
I thought it might be beneficial to tell you a little bit about the
Kindergarten days for the Campbell Kids. Mom is a great teacher, and so she
decided she could handle Kindergarten. Nothing beyond, but Kindergarten was
doable. When Rach and I started K5, she held school in the basement of our
home. Our friend, Joshua joined us for class. I do not remember much about
those days, except for the time we decided to skip school. The 3 of us escaped
the classroom and climbed trees before the school day began. Mom was the best
teacher because she just let us climb those trees all day long. I am sure she
had us make up those lessons, but it may work to our advantage now if she didn’t.
If ever I am having trouble with a task, I can blame it on the missed day of
school in Kindergarten.
Next in line was Monroe. Now boys are an anomaly in our
family. Poor guy had three sisters at the time, and so when it came time for him to
start Kindergarten, Mom felt it best to put him in the class of Mrs. Cassie
Bradley. She had fiery red hair and could keep up with the “best of them” boys!
She is truly one of the finest Kindergarten teachers, and she knew just how to
help Monroe out.
Allison was the lone student in her Kindergarten class. It
was all Mom could do to educate her and handle the new baby, Sarah. Ken
Hatfield, the Clemson football coach at the time, came by for a meeting with Dad
and stopped in for some school too. Allie graduated with honors that year, the
top of her class.
By the time Sarah was ready for Kindergarten, Mom had it
down. She taught Sarah and two of her friends at the home of our pastor at the
time. The youngest always gets it best. They had a special Christmas program
and a real graduation ceremony. There was no skipping school at the pastor’s
house though!
Our family’s Kindergarten tradition was varied for each of
us. One thing is for sure. We learned our letters and our numbers, and for that
we are truly grateful!
