Friend Friday: Reminders of My Family Heritage

By Every Tradition · Every Tradition

Growing up, my siblings and I had the privilege of having four grandmother figures.  That was because we had two wonderful great-aunts who made their home with their sister, who was our grandma on our mother's side.

One of the great-aunts was a world traveler, and she enjoyed bringing home Hummel figurines from Germany and elsewhere.  They had an extensive collection of these pretty pieces that they displayed on bookshelves in their home.  After this aunt had passed away, the other one kept the collection in her room in a retirement home.  Hummels represented family heritage to me.

My father-in-law, who was an avid collector of many things, also had two Hummels in his home that he eventually gave to me, probably to shut me up as I so often exclaimed about how much I liked them.  Those two pieces are treasures, both because they are some of the last gifts I received from him, and because they bring back memories of my much-beloved aunts.

Then, when the days of eBay came along, I discovered that I could buy these figurines online.  I refused to spend the high prices that many sellers ask; however, if one keeps a close eye on the ongoing auctions, it is possible to occasionally find one for around $20.  (I don't want to take advantage of somebody; however, if that person is going to sell low, and doesn't know what they have - it might as well be me who buys their figurines!)

Hummel figurines are special to me because they represent the "every tradition" of my family heritage.  I now have around 20.
