"I dibs to do the dishes"

By Every Tradition · Every Tradition
"I dibs to do the dishes." This phrase was heard after meal times at Grandma and Grandpa Kline's. Grandpa was always quick to serve, and one of the things that he was sure to do was take care of washing the dishes. In October 2005, he was diagnosed with cancer and he died on our birthday, January 8, 2006.

Recently, I received the sweetest gift. Grandma stopped by the office with an envelope. In it was a gift of money. The bills were folded neatly, in such a way that the larger bills were "hidden." It was Grandpa's "emergency" fund that he kept folded in his wallet. For all these years, Grandma had saved that little wad, but she felt it was finally time to part with it. So, she gave it to us to put towards buying a dishwasher. It was the most meaningful gift I have ever received. I told Grandma, "Grandpa is still 'dibs-ing' to do the dishes.

There are lots of memories of Grandpa that we cherish. We will share more in posts to come! Until then, who will "dibs to do the dishes" at your house?
