National PB&J Day and School Lunch
Every school year it was exciting to choose a new lunchbox. There were all kinds of styles. The hard plastic lunchbox, the cooler lunch bag, and of course, the brown paper bag. Although the lunchbox varied in style from year to year, the contents did not. We ate a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I must confess that I went through a period of time during high school where PB&J was not at the top of my list, however in more recent years I have grown to love a good PB&J sandwich on fresh bread!
One other little note. Mom always said that we needed to eat the crust on our sandwiches. Apparently that is where all the nutrients are. We are still trying to figure that one out, but most of the time we do eat the crust.
In honor of National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day, why don't you make yourself a sandwich? It would be a great midnight snack tonight!
Did you eat PB&J for your school lunch? Did your mom make you eat your crust?

Well, apparently I missed an important national holiday, but I do like a good PB&J. Yes, I had to eat the crust too... and yes, so do my kiddos!! It's not at all that it's extra nutritious, and it's definitely NOT that it's the most delicious or best-textured part of the sandwich...but...I PAID for it!! My dad experienced the depression, and perhaps his "waste not" mantra rubbed off on me. Or perhaps I'm married to someone even more frugal than I am!!!
ReplyDeleteAgreed there...a little crust adds up to lots of cents over time!
